Proof of Coppers Cover’s Effectiveness

Recent research from the Research University in Southampton, England has proven Copper Covers can kill /Inactive a 550 viral particles per cm2 sample of SARS CoV 2 within 1 minute.

The test compared the effectiveness of Copper coated 316 stainless steel against normal 316 Stainless Steel surfaces in killing/Inactivating Covid-19.

550 viral particles per cm2 is the equivalent to a standard hand transfer of Covid-19 and 5500 viral particles per cm2 is the equivalent of a droplet of moisture containing Covid-19  The results are as follows.

Proof of Coppers Benefits

There are over 600,000 peer reviewed papers have been published in English on the antimicrobial properties of copper. That number hits 2 million if you include Spanish, German and French academic validations.

The following excerpts are from a paper in Applied & Environmental Microbiology 2019.

“a bed was encapsulated with continuously disinfecting antimicrobial copper surfaces, which reduced the bacteria on surfaces by 94% and sustained the microbial burden below the terminal cleaning and disinfection risk threshold throughout the patient’s stay”

– Safer patients. This proves copper reduces bacterial loading and infection rates.

“In 2013, a study established that upon continuously limiting the bioburden of common patient room objects, a concomitant 58% decrease in the rate of HAI acquisition was similarly observed.”

– Copper reduces HAIs by 58%, saving lives and money.

“Lucado and colleagues reported in 2010 that the cost to treat HAIs results in an additional 19.2 days of care and nearly $43,000 more than stays without infections.”

– Less infections mean less illness and less patient costs, saving the health service in general money for every HAI (Healthcare Acquired Infection) prevented.

“The cost to achieve and maintain this level of cleanliness is based on encapsulating the bed with antimicrobial copper, which was approximately $2,200 per bed amortized over 5 years, or about $1.20 per bed per day. This represents less than 10% of the application costs for other adjunct cleaning options, such as implementing an additional daily cleaning ($12 to $13/room), UV irradiation ($10/room), or hydrogen peroxide vapor phase deposition ($100/room), inclusive of labor, supplies, and equipmentamortization considered for each method.”

– Less cleaning needed, which saves money for the building owner.

Copper alloys significantly reduced concentrations of bacteria on frequently encountered components, sustaining levels prescribed upon completion of terminal cleaning. The average and median of bacteria recovered from frequently touched components from occupied rooms from Grinnell Regional Medical Center once weekly for a period of 1 year are reported. The red line indicates the 250 CFU/100 cm2 threshold concentration recommended for at-risk components immediately upon completion of terminal cleaning. The copper bars represent the mean concentrations of the copper alloy components and surfaces sampled (n = 410). The navy triangles represent the median concentration observed, the white bars the concentrations recovered from the control surfaces and components (n = 419), and the white triangles represent the median concentration observed.

Over 7 million people are affected globally by healthcare associated infections each year – MRSA, E-Coli, Coronavirus to name a few. 37,000 people die due to these infections annually in Europe and over 100,000 in the US. 80% of all infections are spread by touch and one contaminated hand will go on to contaminate at least 7 other touch surfaces on average. The material of the touch surface makes a vital difference. Harmful bugs can survive on stainless steel and plastics for days, if not weeks or months. With copper, they die within minutes as it shuts down the cells biochemistry and physiology. That is why quite a number of hospitals around the world have begun to make the changeover to copper touch surfaces.

From the Canadian Agency for Drugs & Technologies in Health (CADTH):

  • “Antimicrobial copper surfaces have been shown to have intrinsic and continuous broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity that is expected to remain in effect for the product’s lifetime.”

From the Emergency Care Research Institute (ECRI):

  • “Antimicrobial copper surfaces used in healthcare settings include surface components made from copper alloys and hard surface materials infused with copper oxides, both of which exert antimicrobial activity by releasing copper ions at concentrations toxic to microorganisms. Antimicrobial copper surfaces are meant to supplement standard cleaning procedures to reduce hospital acquired infection risk. Their intended benefits include sustained antimicrobial effects independent of human compliance, wear resistance, environmental friendliness and recyclability, and a low risk of adverse events from copper exposure.”
